PRACTICES

Finding joy, gentleness, diets and mandalas

The practices for this section focus on gentleness and allowing your creative impulses to flow.

• Moments of joy promote health so I invite you to focus on joys as much as you can, and that may mean going on a diet of nothing more serious and tense than Walt Disney and Barbara Streisand. (I mean it in a good way.) Be with those you love, make time for friends, creative activity, a good movie, a walk, the sea, feeling close to yourself.

• Be gentle with yourself. Anyone can lose their grasp on life, sense of focus and control, just like slipping off a strict diet or falling off a ski board and breaking a leg. Like dieting, one binge doesn’t mean the diet is over, unless you want it to be. There is only a need to refocus. Composing an update and invitation in two languages did that for me. I consciously regained a grasp on myself and my intentions with every word I wrote communicating to others. What helps you regain your inner power?

• Keep drawing and/or colouring mandalas. The mandala format with its simple geometric beauty makes no demands to draw “identifiable” realistic images or think in words. You can use a compass and ruler to create a geometric mandala design in pencil. You can use coloured pencils, chalk or watercolours, or create a collage; you can outline chosen areas in pen and let your creative instincts loose. Let your colours and sub-patterns be chosen intuitively. If you wish, you can let designs within shapes appear to create complex places of balance. Studies have shown that adult colouring activity, whether in colouring books or mandalas, lowers stress and empowers the immune system.1 Jung felt the mandala format touched one’s innermost self very deeply and considered it the archetype for the self and individuation – the “path to the self”. Each mandala you create is different and expresses your here and now.
